Stock Market Program

Big Shoulders Fund developed the Stock Market Program to bring business professionals into eighth grade classrooms to teach basic concepts related to the stock market, investing, and careers in business. Under the leadership of Big Shoulders Fund Directors Charlie Bobrinskoy and Jim Hoeg, students in the program build a virtual portfolio tied to actual financial incentives for their school. Starting with 3 schools back in 2008-2009 school year, the program has expanded to 61 schools for the 2018-2019 school year.

The Stock Market Program provides the opportunity for eighth grade students to learn about the financial markets, personal savings and investing concepts, and careers within the financial industry. This interactive learning project is taught by volunteer teachers with an interest in mentoring talented and committed children who otherwise would not have the benefit of being exposed to such concepts. Professionals with a background in the financial markets and investing can share their knowledge and encourage young people to get involved in the profession in a supportive, structured environment. The program also provides a modest financial incentive to the school and the students based on the portfolio performance.

If you are interested in learning more about sponsoring a stock market team next year or going to see the program in action, please contact our staff.
